Want to keep crafts a creative industry?

Aparently the UK government doesn't think crafting should be considered part of the creative industries. The Department for Media, Culture and Sport proposed to change the classification of the craft industry as it is supposedly more to do with repetitive manufacturing of handmade goods, and not creative. How absurd!

If you're based in the UK and you disagree with this, be sure to sign this petition on the gov website. You've got until August to make your thoughts known.

Inedible treasury

I was included in this treasury on Etsy. It all looks good enough to eat, but I wouldn't recommend it!

Can you spot which one is my dollhouse miniature?

Everyone loves cheesecake... well not quite

Here is my latest dollhouse miniature creation - a cheesecake set.

Everyone loves cheesecake, don't they? Well not quite. I am an avid dessert eater (I'd happily skip mains and just have two desserts for dinner if it were socially acceptable), but I've never liked cheesecake. Not even chocolate cheesecake! Amazingly I found the one other person on the planet who doesn't like cheesecake either and married him. Our home is a cheesecake-free zone. Well, apart from miniature cheesecakes that is. Hopefully someone's dolls will enjoy these more than I ever could.

Do you have any superpowers, by which I mean skills or attributes that ought not be humanly possible? They don't necessarily have to be useful, or even advantageous.

If I were a superhero, I'd be Tomato girl - the power to get sunburnt without any sunshine.
Exhibit A
I did that while out cycling for the day and desperately gripping the handlebars for 5 hours because my balance isn't brilliant. I didn't put on sun cream because it was cold and cloudy and even raining at times. Nobody else even caught a tan. I managed to burn the only exposed skin available - the backs of my hands and nose. It got even redder than the picture shows later on! I am a puzzle to medical science. Luckily I don't use that part of my hands to make miniatures, so it won't slow me down. I may however invest in a pair of cycling gloves.

Remember kids, always wear sunscreen!

More miniature cupcakes

I've been making and decorating lots of dollhouse miniature cupcakes recently. I am easily bored by repetition, so I love that I can do so many different designs at once!

Cupcakes Inspiration

One of my favourite things to make in miniature are cupcakes. The sky is the limit when it comes to decorating them. Here are some true works of beauty I found while perusing the internet for inspiration on how to decoration my latest dollhouse miniature cupcakes.

Now I'm hungry...

I seem to have made a fair few rings recently, here are some of them:

This one is my favourite because of the little chocolate flower. Yum!

Making the Squirrel Tree Part 3

The Squirrel Tree now has a bit more landscaping. The grass and front path have been finished, and it's grown some extra ivy and foliage too. I've also weathered the side room a little.

I haven't decided if there is going to be a door or not. Perhaps my squirrels are very welcoming?
I repainted the inside to make it a little more tree-like and painted each floor. There's a light dusting of 'moss' to act as a carpet.
And I've positioned the chimney so I know for sure where the fireplace ought to go now.

What a tart!

Here are some fruit tart rings I made a while ago. They remind me of the desserts we used to get when I would vist my family in southern France. We would pick up a fresh and beautiful fruit tart from the bakery on a Sunday morning (the bakery being the only think open on a Sunday morning in France) and I'd spend the entire meal looking forward to it!

Picnic Time

Summer is (hopefully) on its way, and that means it's time for picnics. Here is my latest 12th scale dollhouse miniature picnic set. All we need now is some sunshine.

The sandwiches from my previous post were put to good use!

Made me some sammiches!

Following my lovely sarnie inspiration post, here are some miniature sandwiches I made. There are some ham and tomato, egg and cucumber and salami sandwiches.
And here they are with a cent coin to give an idea of scale.

My favourite ones are the egg and cucumber because I love the way the bright yellow yolk shows through the transluscent cucumber seeds. It's almost a pity to cover most of it up with the top slice of bread.
And here is a pair of sandwich inspired earrings I made for make + MADE.

Make me a sammich!

It's the time of year for picnics and that means sandwiches! Here is some lovely food inspiration so I can get making some miniature sandwiches.

And a ridiculous one to finish.

May the 4th be with you.
Sorry, I could not resist. I'm not even a proper Star Wars fan.

Hurrah for the Rijksmuseum!

In celebration of the reopening of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, I would like to share with you one of my favourite pieces from this leading collection of Dutch art. I was lucky enough to see it in person a few years ago, before the museum closed for refurbishment.

This is the Poppenhuis (dollhouse) of Petronella Oortman from ca. 1686 - ca. 1710. Nobody really knows who made it as it was a private collection. The remarkable thing about this dollhouse, is that everything in miniature is made from what it would be in real life. It is also exactly in scale throughout, and the artistry is exquisite. The exterior itself is a beautifully made cabinet.
I could have spent hours looking just at this one piece, but the Rijksmuseum has a lot more to offer, including some masterpieces like the Night Watch by Rembrandt. No photo does this painting justice, you have to see it in real life to really appreciate the way the light is so amazingly captured on canvas. So if you're lucky enough to be visiting Amsterdam, I would highly recommend it.
